Table of Contents

Michaela DePrince, a world-renowned ballerina born in war-torn Sierra Leone, has tragically passed away at the age of 29. Her family confirmed the news on Facebook, describing her as “an unforgettable inspiration to everyone who knew her or heard her story.” The cause of her sudden death has not been disclosed.

Michaela was born Mabinty Bangura and spent her early years in an orphanage before being adopted by a New Jersey couple. From a young age, she developed a passion for ballet, and that passion would propel her to the heights of the dance world.

Her family shared a heartfelt message: “It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful sister, Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Michaela touched so many lives across the world, including ours.”

Her talent, artistry, and spirit resonated with audiences worldwide, with a tribute on her Instagram page stating, “Her artistry touched countless hearts and her spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the world of ballet and beyond.”

Michaela’s journey from war orphan to star ballerina is nothing short of remarkable. She broke barriers, becoming the youngest principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem before moving to the Netherlands to perform with the Dutch National Ballet. She later danced with the Boston Ballet.

Her story, one of immense resilience, strength, and courage, was not just about dance but about overcoming unimaginable challenges. DePrince published two books, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina and Ballet Dreams, sharing her extraordinary journey with the world.

The impact she had on the ballet world was profound. US ballerina Misty Copeland paid tribute to her, saying, “Despite being told the world wasn’t ready for Black ballerinas, Michaela remained determined and made big strides.”

DePrince’s legacy of perseverance and hope will continue to inspire generations of dancers and all those who were touched by her story. Though her time with us was far too short, her brilliance and impact will live on.
